Calling all clinical and service professionals, policy leaders in the region, community members who support families experiencing substance exposure, nurses, anyone providing substance use treatment or recovery services, social workers, case managers and supervisors. Save the date — Thursday, March 24 — for this important day-long conference addressing the increasing problem of substance use disorders and the stigma that goes with this epidemic.

The Penquis Regional Linking Partnership presents “Changing the Legacy of Addiction – Families Recovering Together.”

Here are the topics:

The genetic basis of addiction and neonatal abstinence syndrome
-Participants will understand the clinical determinants of differences in Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) outcomes.
-Participants will understand the genetic basis for opioid addiction in adults.
-Participants will understand the genetic basis for differences in NAS outcomes.
-Participants will understand the epigenetic basis for differences in NAS outcomes.

Working with families who love someone with a substance use disorder: Why are the words we say so important?
-Participants will gain knowledge and understanding around clinical language when working with families affected by substance use disorder.

Post-discharge support of the substance-exposed mother-infant pair.
-Participants will understand how to best support families of infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome after hospital discharge.

Learning to listen: Working with families affected by a substance use disorder.
-Participants will gain knowledge and understanding of treatment practice in helping families affected by substance use disorders.
